Wow, as much as we love Damon, we have to admit that Stefan and Elena are really freaking cute together.
While Season 1 holds a special place in our hearts — it introduced us to the mad, mad world of The Vampire Diaries, after all — Season 2 was so packed with jaw-dropping moments that we’re still trying to wrap our brains around all the deaths, lies, and mistakes. Without further ado, here are our top 12 OMG moments from Season 2.

12. Isobel's severe sunburn

Despite their issues, Elena accompanies Isobel to the graveyard.
While Jenna and John’s deaths rank as pretty shocking Season 2 moments, if we have to go with just one parental figure’s Season 2 demise, Isobel wins hands down. It wasn’t so much the fact that she died but the way she went out that had our mouths agape. Once she’d been released from Klaus’ compulsion, Isobel removed her SPF-5,000 lapis lazuli necklace and flamed out. John redeemed himself; Jenna made amends with her family; Isobel went out having betrayed everyone she once cared for.

11. Matt remembers to forget

After seeing Matt’s reaction when Caroline revealed to him that she is a vampire, we weren’t sure he’d ever want to go near her again, let alone take her out on a date. However, it looks like these two will make up in time for the 1960s Decade Dance. Caroline manages to convince him to take her, but we can’t help but wonder if she used some good, old-fashioned compulsion. However she did it, these two look picture perfect in 60s garb!
While we always rooted for nice-guy Matt, he’s been kind of a punk this season. Dude totally can’t deal with the fact that his sweetie Caroline sucks blood for a living, and it’s bringing him down. So instead of having a mature conversation, he fakes amnesia and conspires with her mom to take down the vampires. When he slid into Sheriff Forbes’ car and revealed the fact that he’d been vervain-ing it all along, it was pretty clear Caroline was headed for heartbreak.

10. Tyler, transformed

Looks like Tyler’s a lone wolf for now. We’d be more than happy to keep him company!
Back in Season 1, we weren’t too big of fans of Tyler Lockwood. He bullied his girlfriend Vicki, got busy with his best friend Matt’s mom, and was an all-around cocky monster. But once he figured out that his rage stemmed from the Lockwood curse — i.e., werewolfism runs in the blood — he began to deal with his drama. Therefore, when he underwent his first transformation, complete with snapping bones and groans of pain, we actually truly felt for the guy/wolf. It didn’t hurt that the newly sympathetic Caroline was in his corner.

9. Bred for its skills in magic

Klaus may be the most feared vampire of all time, but wow, danger never looked so good.
Have we professed our love for Elijah yet? His deadpan, “I believe the term you’re searching for is ‘OMG’” after he revealed that he and Klaus share a family tree was delicious. And just when we were recovering from that, we learn that Klaus is a were-pire — part werewolf, part vampire, all badass. Our fear goes to 11.
(Season 2, Episode 19, “Klaus”)

8. Carnivorous Caroline

Photo: Damon comes to Caroline's defense, sure that he can successfully take her under his animal-blood-only wing.
Back when Caroline was just a wannabe Queen Bee, we never expected her to grow some fangs and go vampire. In fact, it wasn’t even clear if Caroline would survive the Season 1 car wreck, but with a little help from Damon’s veins, she pulled through. Then in waltzed Katherine, who unceremoniously smothered Caroline, ensuring Blondie’s transformation from teenager to immortal. As Kat herself said, “Game on.”

7. Force feeding

Elena and Stefan face some hard truths.
While we felt reasonably certain Klaus wouldn’t actually kill Elena, we had no idea how the Salvatore bros planned to get her out of the cursed mess. Enter Damon, and his blood, which he made Elena drink like sorority girl shotgunning a beer at a frat house. Would Elena vamp out? We didn’t know, and neither did Elena, but one thing was certain: This is one girl who was not looking forward to her undeath. Things got pretty weepy on Mystic Falls Mountain when Elena confessed to Stefan that she never wanted to be a vampire, and it didn’t look like a Delena reconciliation was in the cards.
(Season 2, Episode 20, “The Last Day”)

6. Bonnie spells death

Photo: Sure, it's always the witch to the rescue.
Bonnie could’ve fed an army of vamps with the amount of blood that’s gushed from her nose this season, so we were pretty concerned for her safety when she went up against Klaus/Alaric (we like to call him Klaric) at the school dance. Even though he was in a haggard history teacher’s body (Klaus’ words, not ours), the Original Vampire was a force to be reckoned with. The only way to beat him was to let him think he’d actually killed the witch. Instead, Bon-Bon had merely faked her death with a spell.
(Season 2, Episode 6, “Plan B”)

5. The nine lives of Jeremy Gilbert

Jeremy gets lost in thought. We’re guessing a certain sacrifice is weighing heavily on his mind.
Damn, Damon does not take rejection well. When Elena told the elder Salvatore that she would also choose his brother Stefan, Damon grabbed Jeremy for demonstration purposes, showing how he could turn off his emotions with a snap. Of the neck, that is. Unbeknownst to Damon, Elena, and us, Jer was rocking a Gilbert protection ring. Whew! Of course that gaudy finger bling wasn’t enough to save Elena’s little bro from the un-supernatural bullets in Sheriff Forbes’ gun, so witchy Bonnie had to summon him back from the other side with a spell. Basically, Jeremy is the Rasputin of Mystic Falls.
(Season 2, Episode 1, “The Return”)

4. Klaus-trophobic

Alaric shows up to chaperone the dance. His stake-thrower could be a nice accessory with that suit.
Alaric had what can be classified as a rough year. While he clocked in a few hours of new-love time with Jenna, he also lost his wife (again) and then his girlfriend. No wonder he and Damon are such good drinking buddies. But said wife also sold him out to Klaus, and we couldn’t be sure what the big baddie had in mind when he abducted the vampire hunter. Nothing could have shocked us more than hearing Klaus’ voice emitted from Alaric’s mouth. It turns out Mr. Saltzman was subjected to some Invasion of the Body Snatchers-style witchy woo that allowed the Original Vampire to test drive the history teacher’s body. Shock and aw, snap.
(Season 2, Episode 17, “Know Thy Enemy”)

3. Ghosts of girlfriends past

Jeremy doesn’t look too thrilled about the screening of Gone With the Wind. An impending sacrifice is such a buzzkill.
When Sheriff Forbes took a shot at Damon, it was Jeremy’s heart that came to a complete stop. But luckily, he’s hooking up with a fiery witch with white-hot powers who was able to bring him back from the dead. But it appeared a string was attached to that resurrection. Apparently, Jeremy didn’t come back from the other side alone: He brought along visions, apparitions, ghosts, or who knows what of his ex-girlfriends Vicki and Anna. Does Jer-ber now have powers of his own? Does this spell a Bon-emy break up? Too many questions.
(Season 2, Episode 22, “As I Lay Dying”)

2. Scary Stefan

Stefan shows his dark side in this flashback.
When TVD flashed back to old-school slasher Stefan, we had no idea a modern resurgence of The Ripper was in cards. But in order to save Damon, the younger Salvatore had to guzzle a few bags of blood at Klaus’ behest and then embark on a murder-filled holiday as the Original Vampire’s fangtastic wingman. Somehow, we don’t think he’ll be sending Elena any postcards.

With a fresh bite on her neck, Elena tries to help Damon.
An uncompelled, non-Katherine-in-disguise, ain’t no peck on the forehead kiss between Damon and Elena? We don’t have words, so here’s the video:
