How would an operating system KNOW it is being run in virtualization? It cannot determine the difference from a real computer. We are talking about Vista like it is an artificial intelligence of some kind.

THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE ABOUT STREAMING. It is going to be about smart syncing media across Macs & iOS devices. You wont delete all your music on your phone or Mac BUT you wont have to have all of it stored locally to have access to all of it. This is going to be how Apple transitions Macs to Flash storage but still allows one to have gigantic iTunes and iPhoto and iMovie libraries. Same with phones and iPads.

This isn't about streaming? So, if I'm driving down I-95 with no music stored locally on my iPhone, how do you expect my iPhone to play my music? Magic, like what the iPad runs on?

I don't need to do squat guy.

If you don't address those very good reasons, your argument won't be very convincing. We do not want the CPU suck, the identity leaking, the UI inconsistencies, and the very real risk of "zero day" Adobe bugs.

WTF do I care about your reasons for wanting to take away my choice to use Flash? I don't.

In other words, you are not competent to carry on a rational discussion. You're just here to vent.

It's not about "propping up" flash, it's about being able to access TODAY'S Internet, not hoping some day that we won't need Flash.

Users of those 120M+ devices don't have to hope. They are already free of Flash!

We just want to use the Internet unfettered by Steve Jobs playing the part of a Communist Dictator.

The analogy makes no sense. Nobody is forcing you to use any Apple product.

If you really want the "full web experience" of zero-day Adobe bugs, get an Android phone. Note: Android phones were vulnerable to the last zero-day Adobe bug. (http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-273.txt)

The only reasons I see from you are excuses to praise Steve.

The fact that I can't catch zero-day Adobe attacks on my iPhone is a great reason to praise Apple's decision.

which does NOTHING to make other Flash functions work, BTW, leaving many sites useless even so

Do tell: what exact sites are you talking about? What exact legacy flash applications are running on those sites to which you can find no substitute?

It's a drop in the ocean compared to the world at large nor should they have to be held hostage by Steve Jobs whose sole goal in life is to get you to pay him for every little thing you do in this world.

Nobody is holding a gun to your head. Nobody is holding you hostage.

If you don't like the choices that Apple made, then ditch your iOS device and get an Android. Simple.

He wants to push his warped agendas and ring every last cent out of you no matter how inconvenient it might be to you.

This is the first little lie in your rant. The iOS users don't find it inconvenient. If Flash were so damn important to them, they would have bought some device that could run Flash.

The people who bought those 120M+ devices disagree with you.

He wants to force the destruction of flash by denying his customers access to a large percentage of the world's web sites all the time while lying about iOS devices being able to access the 'real' or 'full' Internet.

This is the second little lie. Apple did provide a choice: they approved the SkyFire App. They didn't have to do that.

Apple has also announced they will approve Flash Apps using Adobe's cross-compiler for iOS. If there actually are crucial Flash apps -- you haven't named a single specific one so far -- the owners of those apps should be able to easily cross-compile their apps for the iOS App Store.

if you don't have Flash, you don't have the full Internet.

And that is the third little lie. Flash is a proprietary and legacy platform. It's on the way down now.

Even Adobe has acknowledged that a Flash-only choice is a bankrupt strategy (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1039999). After websites start offering their content with an open standard, you've gotta ask: what exactly is the value in continuing to prop up Flash?

I just want innovative products. That is what Steve is good at. That doesn't mean I want his arrogant ego side pushing those products with restrictions that have nothing to do with the technology and only to do with Steve's need to be a control freak.

And this is number four. If those words were true, you would be able to explain why my four huge concerns for running Flash in iOS Safari are not valid. But you can't do that!

If the flash experience is so great, please tell us what exact Flash sites are you talking about? What exact legacy flash applications are running on those sites to which you can find no substitute on your iOS device?

    1) I own both.

They are rectangular and have icons on home screens.

There's only so much one can do with smart phone styling.

It's not like Apples on the verge of going out of business.

    Much ado over nothing.

Like a teenage bully, Apples beyond stupid.

    2) You actually believe clueless sales people?

Okay THAT is just total BS. There are other phones that do not look like iPhone clones out there.

Look at what Microsoft are doing? They are actually giving their mobile platform its own interface and it's own look. You know what? It's pretty damn good too. You don't HAVE to do things the Apple does. No, Samsung copies Apple because they're lazy and they know that they can generate sales on confusing buyers or convincing buyers that this is the same thing as an iPhone. It's so obvious.

It's fine that they want to make touchscreen phones, just create your own look and feel. Granted some of Samsung's phone are worse than others.

    Blatant copying.

AND, if Apple have infringed on anyone else's patents, they should be held accountable too. That's the way that it works. Live by the sword. Die by the sword.

"Still, he said, the company expects it to take three to five years for the effort to really pay off."

This is great news! When the Zune is at its peak in three-five years, it can coincide with the first release of Vista in 2009-2012.

    -_-

    I hate the name Zune.

Might get this, might not. Don't do contracts so it would be a simple case of buying and selling. Something most people I know do. You lot (Americans) should start doing the same and stop being beholden to 24 month contracts.

So many people just love to see every issue from the Apple perspective. There are people who get paid for that. Should not you - as a consumer - care more about the gadget you want than Apple success?

You enjoy seeing every issue from the perspective of someone who wants Apple to fail.

Apple cares very deeply about their product, which is why they don't give in to every spec junkie who demands the latest and greatest immediately. The current chips don't give a usable battery life in Apple's eyes. If you want to get a phone that eats batteries that's your business, but Apple doesn't have an interest in developing anything like that.

Apple does not have to use two chips. They could just design separate phone for Verizon (just like iPhone 4) which does not support GSM. Not ideal but that's where technology is today. At least Verizon customers could enjoy iPhone 5 with LTE.

They would still have to use two chips as I understand it: one to support CDMA and then the other to support LTE.

    In case you didn't notice:

Update: According to a picture of a preliminary product manual obtained by AppleInsider (http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1909), the new wireless Mighty Mouse will use Laser tracking in place of the Optical tracking system the current USB Mighty Mouse uses. Laser-based mice typically are more accurate and less prone to errors on extremely smooth surfaces.

No 512GB SSD option. I would've gladly paid the premium for it (+$1200 instead of +$750), considering how much of a PITA it is to get at that (full logic board removal).

Choosing any SSD brings shipping time up from 1-3 days to 4-6 weeks.

the virtual appliance stuff will be great for people who host their own casual low-traffic blogs and such. i was doing that, but then i worried that someone would hack in and screw with important files. knowing that the server is in a virtual machine would make things a lot nicer.

Unless you can use one of the thunderbolt ports maybe?

Well yes, that's how it would work (and how it works on the current 27" DisplayPort based iMac). But just because you can physically connect a cable doesn't mean it will work as an external display. The connectors were the same on the old 27" and 21.5", but only the larger display functioned as an external display.

I am sure any plans to launch it have been scrapped and this is just a left over prototype. You know Apple has a history of planning for every contingency, I am sure there are Sprint iPhones ready to go also. If Apple decides to release them they would be ready to go.

I very much hope Apple will have a Sprint phone -- I'll buy one that works on Sprint.

Surprising how heated the debate on this can get - I think it's a great story.

Boy makes mistake (as does mother, in not supervising him closely enough). The mother asks for help from Apple, and Apple complies even though they don't have to. The boy, and his mother are very unlikely to make the same mistake again - and the same holds for any parent reading this story! :p

Sounds like a win - win - win - win scenario to me!

Yes, but you are you missing the fact that this is an ideal opportunity for the armchair libertarians to wail about how intrusive the government is.

From my own experience the PS3 and the Nintendo DSi all read iTunes purchased music, albeit with some metadata weirdness.Metadata weirdness is what I have encountered trying to use files that I have in iTunes. It does not occur when importing into iTunes though, only exporting elsewhere.

I know that I have plenty of .songname files in my folders as well. Why iTunes, why?

    Zune HD for one.

The Sansa Fuze+ line too. Creative Zen, Archos, Sonos, Squeezbox.I might have to get a Fuze then. I need something for the car for the times when NPR just is not up to par. I am looking at you weekends...

I am quite happy just buying used CDs and using LAME.

Finally Apple are back from those awful tanking sales G4 years, though will they ever break through that 5% glass ceiling?

At this rate, by the end of the year for sure.
