I think Matte would be good, but you can just go buy a film and apply it quite easily so thats not a show stopper for me, however I have read it can lose some clarity so a factory applied option would be better.

And now you have two additional layers for light from the display to pass through — the arbitrary sheet of glass AND the diffusing film. It's not a real solution.

If I had to guess, I'd say there are three likely reasons Apple went all out gloss:

    1. Impressive in-store displays. Colours look punchier when compared to a matte display, and that appeals to many buyers evidently.

    2. The new black-bordered aesthetics made popular by the iPhone, iPod touch and now the iPad. This gives Apple's modern product line a look of consistency. Again, it's about appearances, not practicalities.

    3. So they can talk about recyclable materials like aluminium and yep… glass. But again, it's all about appearances. Anyone really serious about sustainable living knows that the first, and arguably most important, of the three R's is REDUCE. The glass may be essential on a touch screen device, but it is completely unnecessary on a desktop or laptop display.

No one has it seems. There's reports of a few people running the beta, but it seems isolated. I think it was a release in name only. Hopefully we'll see something around MW in Jan? Who knows.

Has anyone been getting updates at all from VMware? I sent in my request for Discussion Forums (a while back), but haven't gotten access.

I've been using Parallels for running VISTA and Win XP but today I found the link for the Vmware Beta Download that has only from what I understand been handed out to some for testing.

Here is the link that I downloaded the beta from:
    http://fs01n5.sendspace.com/dl/6144991f8a6907390971fa15063bfbdf/45743bcd/h08tq5/VMware-Fusion-e.x.p-33141.dmg

Im running it and works well. I know its in Beta but already after installing and running our Full copy of Vista and Win XP on Fusion, Im going to stick with Vmware.

Now, right now its free, and not sure if it will cost money down the road for Vmware, but this one is free but only perk to Vmware is that the Vmware logo pop up as a water mark on the screen every now and then. Hasesnt really bothered me.

Anyways, good luck if you try it out.
Cant wait for the full release free or not, will probably get it.

    Carter

In one of the cooling towers at the abandoned power station is this foreboding text.
Hope I won't get too much flak for the heavy use of photoshop.
Vignetted, poster-edged, and graduated-blurred, but I was pleased with the comic book result

really? can you show me your At&t speedtest?

I'm not on AT&T (been on Rogers and Wind in Canada). On Rogers/Fido or Bell/Telus/Virgin its not uncommon to consistently hit 5-6mbps on an iPhone or other phone (with hspa up to 7.2mbps). They've had hspa+ in many areas for over a year as well.

So hearing 4mbps out of hspa+ which is being marketed as 4G is just sad.

It turns out the iPod already has some tough competition in the form of the Toshiba Gigabeat S, the Creative Zen M: and V/V plus and the Samsung YP-Z5 seeing how they have so far beaten the iPod in head to head battle on cnet and that site tends to be a little bias towards the ipod specially editor James Kim.

    In the UK edu prices:
£31 for Mighty Mouse and £35 for the Bluetooth version.

Not too bad I guess. I'll be holding out for the black version though :)

I've been checking the UK store (Higher Ed + Normal) since the announcement, the Wireless Mighty Mouse is still not up there. Are you sure you're not confusing the Mighty Mouse with the wired one? ( The Wired Mighty Mouse is is £31.73 H.E, £35.00 Retail)

Plus, I think we've already had a link to MacWorld showing the price at £49.99

Why no Thunderbolt cards for MacPro users?

Your answer is found in MR's story on TB (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/02/25/notes-of-interest-on-thunderbolt-and-macbook-pro/) when it first came out on the MBP's:

    - CNet's live coverage reveals that there are no plans to offer Thunderbolt PCIe cards. In fact, Intel says that you will need a new computer/motherboard to get Thunderbolt. That means Mac Pro owners won't be able to add it on to their systems.
10:25 a.m. (Dong Ngo) : There won't be TB PCIe cards it seems. You'll need a new computer.
    10:34 a.m. (Dong Ngo) : There won't be add-in TB adapters, you'll need a new computer/motherboard that supports TB.

Since it's PCIe related, my guess is that its integration goes deeper than just a "PCIe socket" on the logic board. Just slapping a TB PCIe card in a MacPro won't do it, apparently. Bummer, yeah.

I'm glad I sold my 2008 Mac Pro and picked up one of those new MBP's. I love being able to take my Mac(Book) Pro anywhere with me. Couldn't have done that very easily/conveniently with the Mac Pro. Now hurry up TB dock/RAID. :)

Maybe we should just grab a couple of iphones for...ahem....testing purposes! :)

I have high-precision digital calipers, but only a black phone.

The only reason I found this interesting is the why. If the white phone is thicker, why is it thicker? Different camera vendor (since that's the thickest internal component)? Insulation on the antenna? Different battery? Thicker paint coating to prevent light leaks?

I couldn't care less about the fact that it might be thicker, only the reason. Alas, I don't think it is. Maybe only enough for the paint explanation.

This would be excellent; an iPhone that roam onto any network of the 16 frequency band groups.

Maybe even add RUIM functionality to the iPhone, so we can roam onto CDMA!

    Wouldn't that be grand! :p

49 in the UK LOL.............

    $49 for a mouse lol

Just to be clear... it is USD $69. Which is NUTS. They know that people want a white BT mouse (and there aren't many currently out, if any at all) -- so I can't blame them for taking advantage of supply and demand.

    But... wow. $70 for a mouse. That's... I mean.... $70 for a mouse! :)

I don't understand one thing. Why can't Apple confirm this themselves? That way people will at least know what they can do. Either you wait or you move onto to another device.

because if apple is going to say a new iphone is coming, only a fool will buy the old one at full price

i bet a new is coming in June but apple doesn't want to see a sales drop off. anyone that asks me i tell them that expect a new one in June and don't buy the 4 since it's stone age tech by now

$1000 worth of a beating he'd get if i were his parent. Luckily for kids, i hate them and would never have one. Ever.

    Kids hating kids. Imagine!

ChrisGonzales90: You've ruined my week with that image!

Apple should have safeguards in place to ensure apps are not downloaded without a password when the cost exceeds $20. I even contest the addition of 1 to a bill when it was not part of the contract.

Not wise to step in and try to break up this fight. Knock someone's tooth out, you can get sued. You can get beaten up (or stabbed, or shot) yourself. Whoever called the police and told the attackers they were on their way did the right thing.

You might see this as "warning" them, or helping them to get away; I see it as an effective way to get them to leave the victim alone.

How about someone with a penis and breasts?

I fit this mold; I use the men's room. :o

Very nice pictures. Looks like an "inside job"

A quote from the AppleInsider article:

Along with the filing, the traditionally tight-lipped Apple made a request for confidentiality to the FCC, one which was apparently denied.

"These documents contain detailed system and equipment description and related information about the product that Apple Computer, Inc. considers to be proprietary, confidential, and a custom design and, otherwise would not release to the general public," Apple EMC and wireless engineer Mike Kreige wrote.

    Denied? Apparently so!

People, the single worst thing that the Mac community faces in the area of security is upon us right now...

Little security experts who cry exploit.

Thanks to the media jumping at anything that looks like it could be a security problem with Mac OS X, we now have security experts who are willing to make half-baked claims to draw attention to themselves. But even more frightening is the fact that the Mac community isn't a target because it is a good target or an easy target... no, we are a target because it is the most notable target these days.

So, how do we fix this?

    Frankly, I don't know.

    ...........<text omitted>............

The only thing I can suggest (which I doubt anyone will follow) is to avoid the hysteria. When a real threat emerges, you'll most likely hear about it long before you are actually in any danger from it.

I am with you 100%. Every time one of these 'expert reports' comes out, I see a plethora of panic posts following it. The common theme is; 'we're screwed, someone save us, why doesn't Apple do something!

I think the majority of the security reports are motivated by ego, or most likely, profit. When companies like Network Associates funds a security vulnerability study, it is not done because they are a concerned, benevolent member of the technical community. They are out to make a buck. What they promote is fear. What they sell is reassurance. Nice gig.

I have stayed out of this one for a while, but now he has gone from "sick" to "awesome" with this video on Funny or Die.

I don't even know what to say...

Honestly, me neither. I don't know whether to shake my head incredulously or LMAO. Did Charlie get paid for this?

    Say nothing.

It's the only way to kill him.

Won't happen. Chuck Norris can't even kill Charlie Sheen; the Adonis DNA-infused tiger blood is like Kryptonite to Norris.
