in the middle of way open area at Union Square Park in NYC had 2 dropped calls. Customer services response? Install app on iphone that lets us know where your call was dropped. Sure let me do your work, and pay for that privalage.
And how do you expect them to find out what is going on? Magic? All they wanted you to do was install an app that would let them run a diagnosis. Are they supposed to send some one over to you to take your phone and install it for you?
You do realize that that would increase the time it would take them to find the problem by, a helluva lot vs. the few seconds it would take you to install that app. And it would be wasting a lot of gas and pay time to send that person out for something you could do in a few seconds.
How lazy can you be to complain that they dare want you to do a few seconds of work so they can help you?
I've never come across a company that will baby the customer that much. Apple still insists I drive my computer over to their store for them to look at. When I was calling in about a broken monitor, I had to *gasp*, look for the serial number on my computer for Gateway. I guess you'd expect them to send some one over to do that for me?

I believe you are all missing the point.
The studios want HDCP over DVI and HDMI or whatever. There are no current systems that properly use it, even if they say they do, because the licenses or permissions have not been distributed yet and they are HARDWARE objects.

Pretty muc everyone who actually had to *use* Notes for work hates it.
The only people who seem to be praising it are the ones who are paid to maintain it. Notice how the Notes fanbois refer to it as a "product", "platform", "solution", etc - and yet provide not a single example where the features of the client itself would make the user more happy and productive.
Yes, I said the word: User!
It's the users that matter most.
And Notes client makes any user miserable.
It is slow, it uses non-standard interface elements, and it has a really steep learning curve (even for the 'engineer' types). I am not a big fan of Outlook, but even Outlook is light years ahead of Notes.
As for the Domino server itself... That thing is just as bad as the client.
Its raison d'etre seems to be simplification of development process.
And it might have made (some limited) sense in 1995.
Not anymore.
Everything, and I mean everything, that you can do with Domino, you can do with Ruby, PHP/MySQL/PostgreSQL, WebObjects, or Java.
You can do it in less time, using highly visual dev environments. You can also easily collaborate on the development process, and systematically create concise documentation. The finished product will run fast and solid, and it won't depend on proprietary (terrible) client software. You will just need a web browser.
Domino, on the other hand, is pure garbage. I remember working in a 20 person company back in '00 where we had a Domino server running on a dual 500MHz PIII server with 2 gigs of RAM - very expensive at the time. It was very hard on the poor machine. It was choking. And the only three things the server was used for were email, very basic scheduling, and a billable hour tracking app. Not that that server is any speed demon by modern standards... But a non-Domino system having the same functionality would not have created any measurable load on the server at all with only 20 users. Did I also mention the server was less than stable? And I still remember how SP6 for NT completely brought the damn thing down... Ouch.
I agree for the most part. It's the same where I work. We had one resident Domino fan (who left us about 8 months ago), and she was the only one in our department who really liked it. Most IT people I know hate Lotus Notes, and our department is no exception. The client is an absolute pain in the ass to contend with. The whole system of IDs and certifiers is a nightmare.
Here are some perfect examples of what's wrong with Domino/Notes.

So, someone accidentally deletes their ID file (which I'm sure happens at places all the time), you can't regenerate it, and you have to recreate the account? Ludicrous.
2. Or how about the fact that in Domino Admin, I can't change the password in an ID file, so if someone forgets it, they're SOL? As the admin I can't change a password???!!?
3. We've currently got about 5000 users on our student email server. These are iNotes only users -- they don't get ID files and they don't use the Notes client, just web-mail. Domino doesn't provide anyway to track usage of these, only with Notes-ID clients. I've been trying to come up with a way to show how many people are accessing their accounts, and you just can't do it. I've spent hours on the phone with IBM trying to figure this out, and I can't. Their techs don't know how to do it. I'm trying to figure out who hasn't used their account in a year or more so they can be deleted, and IBM doesn't give you any way to track usage through the web client.
Good stuff.

It's amazing just how few (3 so far that I can count) SERIOUS and thoughtful replies to this thread there have been. It almost seems that without personal attacks or social distress we have nothing to talk about... even when faced with the amazingly detrimental economic situation described in the OP. Truly fascinating. Seems more true to me than ever that most on the left either A) fail to recognize the depth and seriousness of the problem at hand, B) don't care or aren't willing to make the necessary cuts to maintain economic sanity, C) are too busy playing petty politics (the blame game) worrying about who caused the problem instead of who's going to fix it. It seems that unless the threads directly pit right vs. left, no one cares enough to engage intellectually and make progress towards a solution. Anyway, thanks to the posters above who actually contributed... I may not agree with your suggestions, but at least your in the arena.
And in the 14,298 other threads in which people have brought up OTHER solutions to reduce deficit/debt, you pull the same crap. So don't start with that. You are one of the biggest pots in a sea of black kettles.
Unless the solution is cutting SS, Medicare, or Medicaid, or any myriad of programs that actually help people, you and your ilk want nothing of it. You want more cut taxes for wealthy and less tax and regulation on business. Period. To you, that is the ONLY way to move forward.

"Aliens vs Predator Requiem" was edited on Final Cut. But that movie was terrible. Maybe it was Final Cut�s fault. ;)
But in all seriousness: I think a new Final Cut version is clearly overdue. FCS3 was more like a feature-patch for FCS2 than a new version. These days not having any kind of native AVCHD support really slows you down (and uses up a lot of storage space) particularly considering the DSLR-hype since 2009!
I remember a friend of mine who had bought a Panasonic HMC 150 (which is a professional camera) before FCS3 was released and was expecting native AVCHD in the next release. He has been waiting for this feature for almost two years now, while all the other big editing systems have had it for a while, as far as I know!
I'm into the casual AVCHD use like most consumers, and while my opinion doesn't count the same as most of the heavy editors commenting, Steve Jobs does tend to have a liking for "the river coming to us" as the best use of resources.
In that regard, and with Intel popping Sandy Bridge on the CES stage in January, AVC will get some much needed silicon on chip for encode/decode; the only codec to get that treatment. I doubt that this is anything but conincidence, as OpenCL / Grand Central are much more necessary for FCP's overhaul, but it strikes me that any Sandy Bridge processor in any Mac will by definition ease the AVCHD issues in all of Apple's video applications. Since AVCHD is in the core, one can imagine imagine that future Xeon processors should be quite suitable for AVCHD editing (it's my understanding that the AVCHD standard supports division of the frame into 4 chunks for multithreading).
I hope that this thread is still alive when FCP arrives and that further, there are commenters with with hands on use of the Panasonic AG-AF100 and Sony NEX video cameras supporting AVCHD and dslr lenses.

i would think 'yes' and 'yes'. more ram will make everything work better, but i also saw a huge improvement moving to a better/faster video card.
ask zen about his card since he is still up and running everyday. i used a pc ATI 9800 and flashed it, then installed a super quiet arctic-cooling aftermarket rig, worked like magic on everything from desktop to 'eye candy' to internet.
you know, you're going to need to post pictures of this thing at some point, or it didn't happen... ;) best of luck.

I disabled what I do not use in restrictions under the setting menu. A matter of preference of course as to what you wish to restrict, I turned off youtube, ping and itunes and my phone 4 running 4.3.1 seems to be running a bit more smoothly. I miss 4.2.1 and unfortunately, apple will not allow us to downgrade. Cautiously optomistic for the next update!
